ROAD TRIPPP

March 29, 2010

Well this was a bad time for a road rip. I had recently been sick so I didnt think I could attend this outing. But with some help from antibiotics , I pulled myself together. I ventured out half way through the trip. I had been to the Dail before with school( awwwwwww good times) So i decided to meet up with the guys at the science gallery. From the 20th of March until the 11th of June, there is an exhibition showing ‘Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef’. A woolly wonder. This is done by the Institute for Figuring and Companions.

The “Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef” is a worldwide project that marries mathematics, marine biology, handicraft, community art practice and environmental consciousness-raising. People all over the world – from London and New York to Capetown – are collectively crocheting coral reefs, a woolly testimony to the disappearing wonder of living reefs that are being devastated by global warming. At the workshop, participants will join curator Margaret Wertheim to finalise the process of making an “Irish Reef”, which will be exhibited alongside the international crochet reef collection at Science Gallery in Spring 2010.

To gove more information what our trip was about. We split up into groups of 3 and went around with like a tour guide. They showed us each art display and went into depth about each design. It was beautiful and very heart warming to know people are using art too display their feelings on big natural causes. I enjoyed the trip even though I missed the dail. Some people felt the trip had no cnnection to our studies , but i just thought to get out of college for a day was nice of the lectures. :)

We also had a few pints afterwards ( well i didnt cause i was still in sick mode) and that was a bit of banter !!! MAN I LOVE COLLEGE

Working In creative Digital Media_ Fiona Kelly

March 15, 2010

Fiona opened her talk with these wise words ” Nothing is Original”

She also parted some of her secret creativity designs with us:

Smashing magazine

istockphoto

del.icio.us

twitter

digg

Fiona discussed about some recent projects she undertook and how she worked on them. What went into them etc..

Fat kitty films (Logo)

It started off with mood boards, then research went into fonts, colors and shapes, illustrated cats . Then when all necessary things were chosen, the design process happened. There were many samples before the actual one was chosen by the company. Also business cards were made .

Dublin Gay theatre festival (Website)

She researched other GAY FESTIVAL websites and also GAY websites in general to get a general theme or look. She particular payed close attention to the fringe website. She focused on the colour and form of the website.

My home.ie ( banner add)

Fiona was involved with creating a flash banner ad for the website.

Puca (Website redesign)

The client provided inspirations for Fiona to work with. She devised many wireframes until the client had agreed to one. She wanted to emphasis on their animated “pucas” because she thought they would add individuality to their website. Unfortuanetly the client didnt really want to persue the “puca” idea. So eventually they came to an agreed website that both Fiona and the client loved.

Her last words in the talk were “talent is the desire to practise”

I really loved this talk. Fiona came across very head strong and truly motivated. Her little quotes and the start and end of the talk were quite inspiring . Designing can be very hard as sometimes you can believe your work is not good enough but if you believe in yourself and use your skills to their best ability then you have nothing to worry about. And I sort of only learned that now :)

Working in Creative Digiatal Media_ Emma Wade

March 4, 2010

Okay as i was out for this speaker due to a christening in galway..(Iknow excuses excuses) I researched this guest speaker on the internet and came across her website. So here is some information on what I have found.

Emma Wade is a Wexford born visual artist based in Dublin, Ireland. She works with installation, digital media, lens based media and performance. Her work is often playful, interactive and audience focused.

^I copied this from her bio on her website because I thought it summed her up very well.

Emma received many awards. In summer 2008, she completed an internship in New Media Education at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. She recently undertook an artist residency in Limerick City Gallery of Art. RedSpace Studios, her practice is currently based in Dublin

Play and humour are  necesary tools used, as well as entertain, in Emma’s practice. Her work is largely interactive and requires audience participation.A participant is often intentionally or unintentionally a performer. Without a participant the work is incomplete. Science and Pseudo-science  have a heavily influence on Emma’s  practice. Scientific fact and common belief have fascinated her for many years. Her current research investigates the physiological effects of deep pressure and cellular memory in a fine art context.

Her website is fascinating and gives a great outlook on what she and her practise actually achieve. Here are some projects done by Emma.

H.U.G.S

The project comments on the need for human contact, dislocation of communities, and our intertwining relationships with machines.

Emma has a look at why hugs are a stimilious for happiness in a person. WIth her fascination into science aswell as common fact she has devised a machine which allows preesure over a certain amount of the body which then in turns acts like a hug giving the person the felling of happiness.

Intersection Cafe

A nice outlook on the present time in dublin. This project aims to capture a moment in time in Dublin through its observation of people at a particular spot in an Irish Café. The aim is to recapture the essence of life on this busy junction, the people who frequent it and the passers by. The piece is intended to be a metaphor for time and place in Ireland’s capital.

 Rexotrek

This is my favorie of her projects. Looking into the happiness of a dog. My fellow students who attended the talk said that she followed her dog around with cameras and gps devises for 9 months…SHOCKING.

The project is informed by an interest in the relationship between dog and man and how we still do not know a great deal about how dogs perceive the world, even though our lives have been intertwined for centuries.

The Cheer Up.

How it works
The user steps on a sensor mat. This activates applause. The user smiles. Their photo is taken. They keep stepping on and off the mat and their invisible audience becomes more and more appreciative.

This seems like a really interesting project and  I would love to see the faces of people satnding on the mat.

Even though i wasnt there for the talk I still got a great amount of information on her website. Her website is very interesting and i will be definitlybe passing it on to many people :)
