Bad Taste Is Better Then No Taste
May 6, 2010Working in Digital Media _ Robbie Ward
April 24, 2010Influencing purchases with digital media
Robbie Ward works for BPM media. Their clients consist of bars, nightclubs and department stores. Their main goal is to try get people to part with cash wit the use of the media. The main media they use is audio, visuals and interaction.
These videos are placed in venues such as Copper Face Jacks, Fitzsimons and club m. They also create the text that flows across the screen that can contain messages for people by texting a particular number. Also included in these videos adverts for restaurants advertising their food or specials of the day. They have in-house music channels that play all the latest chart music that appeals to a main audience for these venues that help encourage people to re-visit the business. For example in a restaurant, French music was played on a certain day and the sale of wines from France increased.
He discusses about how “Understanding your audience” is very vital.
who visits, when and how often?
How long we got to influence them
Use customer information to build profile.
Look at all media areas
Audit the media space such as zones, queues or waiting areas and high traffic areas.
Designing relevant , timely and appropriate content
keep information updated
must be interesting
treat audio with care
Making it easy for customers to consume digital media
customer must be able to get the message with no effort
100% direct line of sight
100% at eye level
100% audio cover
Delivering a measurable return (for the customer)
Customers are media savvy , therefore more critical.
Bpm merge with audio media company to help their systems set up. And sales come through sale agents. It usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for a bpm system to be set up within a venue.
This was an interesting speaker. I hadn’t thought of a job in the media sector to be like this. The job kind of comes across sneaky, as the goal of the company is to try manipulate a customer into “shedding he/she cash” without the customer realizing. haha maybe i am thinking too much into it. It wouldn’t be a job i would be interested in. I dont think i could be that sneaky……Good talk though
ROAD TRIPPP
March 29, 2010Well this was a bad time for a road rip. I had recently been sick so I didnt think I could attend this outing. But with some help from antibiotics , I pulled myself together. I ventured out half way through the trip. I had been to the Dail before with school( awwwwwww good times) So i decided to meet up with the guys at the science gallery. From the 20th of March until the 11th of June, there is an exhibition showing ‘Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef’. A woolly wonder. This is done by the Institute for Figuring and Companions.
The “Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef” is a worldwide project that marries mathematics, marine biology, handicraft, community art practice and environmental consciousness-raising. People all over the world – from London and New York to Capetown – are collectively crocheting coral reefs, a woolly testimony to the disappearing wonder of living reefs that are being devastated by global warming. At the workshop, participants will join curator Margaret Wertheim to finalise the process of making an “Irish Reef”, which will be exhibited alongside the international crochet reef collection at Science Gallery in Spring 2010.
- taken from the science gallery website.
To gove more information what our trip was about. We split up into groups of 3 and went around with like a tour guide. They showed us each art display and went into depth about each design. It was beautiful and very heart warming to know people are using art too display their feelings on big natural causes. I enjoyed the trip even though I missed the dail. Some people felt the trip had no cnnection to our studies , but i just thought to get out of college for a day was nice of the lectures.
We also had a few pints afterwards ( well i didnt cause i was still in sick mode) and that was a bit of banter !!! MAN I LOVE COLLEGE
Working In creative Digital Media_ Fiona Kelly
March 15, 2010Fiona opened her talk with these wise words ” Nothing is Original”
She also parted some of her secret creativity designs with us:
Smashing magazine
istockphoto
del.icio.us
digg
Fiona discussed about some recent projects she undertook and how she worked on them. What went into them etc..
Fat kitty films (Logo)
It started off with mood boards, then research went into fonts, colors and shapes, illustrated cats . Then when all necessary things were chosen, the design process happened. There were many samples before the actual one was chosen by the company. Also business cards were made .
Dublin Gay theatre festival (Website)
She researched other GAY FESTIVAL websites and also GAY websites in general to get a general theme or look. She particular payed close attention to the fringe website. She focused on the colour and form of the website.
My home.ie ( banner add)
Fiona was involved with creating a flash banner ad for the website.
Puca (Website redesign)
The client provided inspirations for Fiona to work with. She devised many wireframes until the client had agreed to one. She wanted to emphasis on their animated “pucas” because she thought they would add individuality to their website. Unfortuanetly the client didnt really want to persue the “puca” idea. So eventually they came to an agreed website that both Fiona and the client loved.
Her last words in the talk were “talent is the desire to practise”
I really loved this talk. Fiona came across very head strong and truly motivated. Her little quotes and the start and end of the talk were quite inspiring . Designing can be very hard as sometimes you can believe your work is not good enough but if you believe in yourself and use your skills to their best ability then you have nothing to worry about. And I sort of only learned that now
Working in Creative Digiatal Media_ Emma Wade
March 4, 2010Okay as i was out for this speaker due to a christening in galway..(Iknow excuses excuses) I researched this guest speaker on the internet and came across her website. So here is some information on what I have found.
Emma Wade is a Wexford born visual artist based in Dublin, Ireland. She works with installation, digital media, lens based media and performance. Her work is often playful, interactive and audience focused.
^I copied this from her bio on her website because I thought it summed her up very well.
Emma received many awards. In summer 2008, she completed an internship in New Media Education at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. She recently undertook an artist residency in Limerick City Gallery of Art. RedSpace Studios, her practice is currently based in Dublin
Play and humour are necesary tools used, as well as entertain, in Emma’s practice. Her work is largely interactive and requires audience participation.A participant is often intentionally or unintentionally a performer. Without a participant the work is incomplete. Science and Pseudo-science have a heavily influence on Emma’s practice. Scientific fact and common belief have fascinated her for many years. Her current research investigates the physiological effects of deep pressure and cellular memory in a fine art context.
Her website is fascinating and gives a great outlook on what she and her practise actually achieve. Here are some projects done by Emma.
H.U.G.S
| The project comments on the need for human contact, dislocation of communities, and our intertwining relationships with machines.
Emma has a look at why hugs are a stimilious for happiness in a person. WIth her fascination into science aswell as common fact she has devised a machine which allows preesure over a certain amount of the body which then in turns acts like a hug giving the person the felling of happiness. Intersection CafeA nice outlook on the present time in dublin. This project aims to capture a moment in time in Dublin through its observation of people at a particular spot in an Irish Café. The aim is to recapture the essence of life on this busy junction, the people who frequent it and the passers by. The piece is intended to be a metaphor for time and place in Ireland’s capital. RexotrekThis is my favorie of her projects. Looking into the happiness of a dog. My fellow students who attended the talk said that she followed her dog around with cameras and gps devises for 9 months…SHOCKING. The project is informed by an interest in the relationship between dog and man and how we still do not know a great deal about how dogs perceive the world, even though our lives have been intertwined for centuries. The Cheer Up.How it works This seems like a really interesting project and I would love to see the faces of people satnding on the mat. Even though i wasnt there for the talk I still got a great amount of information on her website. Her website is very interesting and i will be definitlybe passing it on to many people http://emmawade.com/

Working in Creative Digital Media_Ian Cudmore
February 25, 2010As i was out for this speaker ,which i was raging because i have ben reading other people’s blogs and they all said his talk was one of the best. So this is the information i have gained from “borrowing” from other fellow students
Ian Cudamore graduated from NCAD in 2006 from Industrial Design and Product Design and later studied at Trinity college for a further 2 years where he gained a masters in Music and Media Technology. After this, he had a three month internship at One Productions, mainly working with Flash ads. He then moved onto Hyper Production Company which he did some editing. Unfortunately, the company closed. This resulted him into freelance editing work. he never thought about being a freelance editor but he was liking it so far.
Ian in his own time directed and edited music videos. He created a video for a Scottish artist called James Yorkston. He sent the video that he had made through Myspace . By chance people contacted Ian and told him that they liked what he had created and if he would be interested in doing a documentary for him. He also created an EPK, which is an Electronic Press Kit. This is a short documentary for the press so that you can make a good impression for the small artist to make a splash.
Ian met a guy called Donal Dineen through James Yorkston. Donal is very creative photographer and had many skills. Ian and Donal joined forces and used their skills on different projects. Donal had done some work for an up and coming artist Lisa Hannigan’s first gig which led to her getting in touch with Donal again. She asked Donal and Ian to create an EPK for her. They spent the weekend in Kerry recording concerts and interviews. Ian said at the talk that this was not for money purposes but for just experience. The particular song that they had done for Lisa was viewed by a talkshow host in America and invited her on to the show. Well done lads
So he had a good thing going after this. Comedian Maeve Higgins wanted Ian produce her show.This was his first proper production job. The production of the show took 3 -4 months with editing and filming.He also done a Christmas episode for Maeve which took about three weeks to cut. He began telling people he was an editor after this job. Ian was then an assembly editor with Scratch Films on a show called ‘The School’. He started January of last year and they had been filming all year. He divided editing into 3 strands;
Assistant, Assembling and Comminsion
At the moment, Ian is ‘officially directing’ a three episode mock documentary called ‘We Own The Streets’ for Storyland, for RTÉ. The ‘show’ is about a guy called Tom Walsh, who is a friend of Ian’s, that created a character called ‘XL’. XL is thirty years old and unemployed. He likes music and “free running”. Everybody plays themselves in the episodes.
From the sounds of Ian I think he sounds like a very interesting, ambitious young man.I would love to produce music videos for up and coming artist I like. It seems like the perfect job, even if it isnt well paid. Money doesnt buy you Happiness……
